How to Clean Block Paving: Complete Guide for Irish Homeowners

Keep your driveway looking great with our complete block paving cleaning guide for the Irish climate.
How to Clean Block Paving in Ireland
Ireland's wet climate means driveways accumulate moss, algae and weeds faster than drier countries. Here's how to keep yours clean.
What You'll Need
- Pressure washer (1500–2000 PSI)
- Block paving cleaner or diluted bleach
- Stiff brush
- Kiln-dried sand
- Weed killer
Step-by-Step Process
Step 1: Remove weeds and moss
Apply a weed killer or moss remover and leave for 24–48 hours. Remove dead growth with a stiff brush.
Step 2: Pressure wash
Work in sections, keeping the lance at a 45-degree angle. Avoid direct 90-degree blasting which can dislodge jointing sand.
Step 3: Apply cleaner for stains
Oil stains need a degreaser. Apply, leave for 20 minutes, scrub and rinse.
Step 4: Re-sand the joints
After washing, joints will lose sand. Brush kiln-dried sand across the surface and work it into the joints.
Step 5: Seal (optional)
A block paving sealant protects against weeds and stains and extends the life of the surface.
How Often?
Clean block paving at least once per year — autumn is ideal to remove summer growth before winter frost.
