Block Paving vs Cobblelock: What's the Difference?

Block paving and cobblelock are often confused. Here's what makes them different and which is right for your home.
Block Paving vs Cobblelock — The Key Differences
In Ireland, "cobblelock" is the common term for concrete block paving laid in an interlocking pattern. Technically, all cobblelock is block paving, but not all block paving is cobblelock.
Cobblelock
Cobblelock refers specifically to the Dutch-style interlocking concrete blocks popularised in Ireland in the 1990s. The blocks typically measure 200mm × 100mm × 60mm and are laid in a herringbone pattern.
Pros: Very durable, well-draining, repairable, widely available in Ireland
Cons: Can look dated if not well-maintained, limited colour range
Block Paving
Block paving is the broader category. It includes tegula blocks, tumbled blocks, clay pavers, and premium concrete blocks with more refined finishes.
Pros: Far more design options, premium appearance, modern finishes
Cons: Higher cost for premium ranges
Which Should You Choose?
For a budget-conscious driveway that will last decades — cobblelock is excellent value. For a premium finish that enhances kerb appeal significantly — premium block paving is worth the investment. View our driveway installation services for examples of both.
